چکیده

We investigated the effects of chromate (CrVI) and phosphate (P) on their uptake and translocation in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata (PV). Plants were exposed to 1) 0.05 mM CrVI and 0, 0.05, 0.25 or 1.25 mM P or 2) 0.25 mM P and 0, 0.05, 0.25 or 1.25 mM CrVI for 24 h in hydroponics. PV accumulated 2,919 mg/kg Cr in the roots at CrVI0.05, and 5,100 and 3,500 mg/kg P in the fronds and roots at P0.25. When co-present, CrVI and P inhibited each other’s uptake in PV. Increasing P concentrations reduced Cr root concentrations by 6282% whereas increasing CrVI concentrations reduced frond P concentrations by 5259% but increased root P concentrations by 1115%. Chromate reduced P transport, with more P being accumulated in PV roots. Though CrVI was supplied, 6478% and 92% CrIII were in PV fronds and roots. Based on X-ray diffraction, Cr2O3 was detected in roots confirming CrVI reduction to CrIII by PV. In short, CrVI and P inhibited each other in uptake and translocation by PV and CrVI reduction to CrIII in PV roots served as its detoxification mechanism. The finding helps to understand the interactions of P and Cr during their uptake in PV.

Sorption of triazine and organophosphorus pesticides on soil and biochar.

Sorption and degradation are the primary processes controlling the efficacy and runoff contamination risk of agrochemicals. Considering the longevity of biochar in agroecosystems, biochar soil amendment must be carefully evaluated on the basis of the target agrochemical and soil types to achieve agricultural (minimum impact on efficacy) and environmental (minimum runoff contamination) benefits....

Effects of chemical, biological, and physical aging as well as soil addition on the sorption of pyrene to activated carbon and biochar.

In this study, the suitability of biochar and activated carbon (AC) for contaminated soil remediation is investigated by determining the sorption of pyrene to both materials in the presence and absence of soil and before as well as after aging. Biochar and AC were aged either alone or mixed with soil via exposure to (a) nutrients and microorganisms (biological), (b) 60 and 110 °C (chemical), an...

Enhanced Immobilization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Contaminated Soil Using Forest Wood-Derived Biochar and Activated Carbon under Saturated Conditions, and the Importance of Biochar Particle Size

Leaching behavior of organic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be altered in the presence of organic amendments through enhanced sorption of PAHs to the amended soil. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of biochar in two forms (i.e., crushed and pulverized), and granular activated carbon on immobilization and leaching behavior of selected...

Effect of biochar amendment on sorption and leaching of nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate in a sandy soil.

When applied to soils, it is unclear whether and how biochar can affect soil nutrients. This has implications both to the availability of nutrients to plants or microbes, as well as to the question of whether biochar soil amendment may enhance or reduce the leaching of nutrients. In this work, a range of laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of biochar amendment on sorpt...

Biochar effects on soil biota e A review

Soil amendment with biochar is evaluated globally as a means to improve soil fertility and to mitigate climate change. However, the effects of biochar on soil biota have received much less attention than its effects on soil chemical properties. A review of the literature reveals a significant number of early studies on biochar-type materials as soil amendments either for managing pathogens, as ...

The Effect of Fruit Trees Pruning Waste Biochar on some Soil Biological Properties under Rhizobox Conditions

The pyrolysis of fruit trees Pruning waste to be converted to biochar with microbial inoculation is a strategy improving the biological properties in calcareous soils. In order to investigate the biochar effect on some soil biological properties of the soil in the presence of microorganisms, a factorial experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design in the rhizobox under greenhous...
